Tyson Gay was the most impressive runner in the preliminaries, particularly in the first round where he cruised to a 19.99w (4.3) clocking ahead of a field all of whom progressed to round two. Wind conditions varied enormously. Only two races after the 19.99, Spearmon won his heat in 20.51 into a 2.7 wind. Gay was fastest next day in both the second round and semis. The four Americans – including defending champion Capel competing as a “wild card” – ran 1-2 in the two semi-finals, garnering the best lanes in the final.
With the temperature down to 11°C the final was not going to be won in an exceptional time. Gatlin, in the outside of the seeded lanes (3-6), got a good start, and “running scared”, as he later put it, was never headed. Spearmon and the fast-finishing Capel took the other medals. The only perceived threat to the US hegemony was Bolt, whose long legs were unable to cope with lane 1, and he suffered a muscle pull 50m from the finish while in fifth place. Prior to 2005 there had been 11 clean sweeps in the 382 individual World championship finals, but here we were seeing a 1-4 sweep for the first time.
